01Overview

Ornament rarely fails all at once. One quadrant of a medallion stays crisp while another is lost, and the sound one is the pattern for the repair.

Decorative plaster can almost never be replaced with stock pieces. We look at whether the original can be stabilized, repaired, or reproduced from the best surviving detail.

Because these details repeat, a sound section is nearly always available to work from, which is what makes a faithful repair possible.

Heavy paint build-up is its own problem. Removing it carefully often recovers more of the original crispness than any amount of new material.

02How we approach it

Keep what is sound. Match what is missing.

  1. 1

    Find a sound repeat

Ornament repeats around a medallion or along a border. The best surviving repeat becomes the pattern.

  2. 2

    Recover what paint has buried

Where layers of paint have softened the detail, careful removal brings the original edges back.

  3. 3

    Recast what is lost

A mould is taken from the sound repeat and missing ornament is cast, set in line and blended.
